Breaking A Guinness World Record
1177 MARIMBA PLAYERS
MAKE HISTORY AT GRANDWEST
On 2 August 2025, 1177 marimba players from across South Africa and Zimbabwe gathered at GrandWest, Grand Arena to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Marimba Ensemble! The over 70 schools who participated made history by doubling the previous record of 505 marimba players set by Guatemala in 2021.
The ensemble broke the Guinness World Record by playing a medley of "Waka Waka" and "Jerusalema," two songs which
have become synonymous with uniting people across the world through music and dance.

Following our previous successful attempt in 2018, where 241 incredible women came together to set the record at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, our 2025 attempt returned with an even bigger and bolder vision. It aimed to gather a diverse group of participants from all walks of life to form a powerful and unified ensemble that resonated far beyond just breaking a world record.

In 2025, we built on the 2018 legacy, bringing together participants from every corner of society to once again show the world the power of music to break barriers, build communities, and inspire change. With the collective energy of everyone involved, this record-breaking event was not only a celebration of African music but also a tribute to the global spirit of unity and cooperation.
